Arlo, it might be one of those hours or days when you just prepare to see if the dark cloud passes by or if you will need to find a port when the storm hits.
BTW, “Gomer Pyle” was a character on the Andy Griffith show from the late 50s to early 60s. He was an “ahh shucks” kind of guy who was goofy but always came out on top. There was a spin-off show called “Gomer Pyle USMC” where he played the same character and no matter what happened, he always came out on top. The character was portrayed by Jim Nabors, who in real life had an operatic voice and released a few albums.
I heard a comedian tell the story of them being just married and he was doing his act and had the club rolling with laughter. Later that night basking in his ability, he told his wife, “I think I was a hit tonight, I had everyone laughing.” His wife looked over at him and smiled, “Yes dear and now it is my turn!”

Some people have faces that are naturally unsmiling/grumpy at rest. Myself included. My hubby has the look of a KGB killer in old B&W films and he is the sweetest man ever. I hate being told to smile. Mind your own business, I am not on a show for your pleasure. And if you insist you get the shark grin. Cold eyes, mouth full of teeth.

Going for a ‘dig’, instead of a Gomer Pyle smile, try Jerry Lewis. HELLO NICE LADY!

I you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours. If they don’t smile back, give them a WIDE berth.

Is this self-deprecation from our esteemed cartoonist about his drawing skills?

She might have liked Gomer. It actually looked more like The Joker than Gomer Pyle.

A smile is a frown turned upside down, so if you meet someone without a smile, just turn ’m upside down!

According to Norwegians if you see someone walking down the street who is smiling at you they are American or crazy or both.

I don’t smile very much and that is just me. Forcing me or anyone to smile isn’t healthy. I don’t see a reason to do it much.

It’s just a suggestion. If you want to scowl, it may be better than the grumpy face you had before.
