Not very many people will finish a book in the time they think they will; especially a 9-year-old.

Given that Frazz takes place in Michigan, this might be the store his shirt references:

summer reading should be light and fun. Nothing tough. I suggest some James Harriett.

Happy 4th to all. And be thankful we reached that milestone early in our history. Many countries have never approached the same freedoms that we have enjoyed for these 242 years.

My maternal grandparents immigrated to America early in the 20th Century, and my mother grew up in a household that spoke only Serbian, so she was still fluent in it (even tho she’d been speaking English daily for half a century) when her niece, the travel agent, asked her Aunt Melie to be the all-expenses-paid translator for a summer tour group she was organizing to the former Yugoslavia. The plane touched down initially in Paris, and my mom was very impressed with the way the French welcomed Americans with lots of red, white, and blue bunting and fireworks. I didn’t have the heart to point out to her that that particular day, 1989 July 14, happened to be the 200th anniversary of Bastille Day, and the celebration probably wasn’t in honor of the USA.

The Nation always celebrates my brother’s birthday (today) but the world celebrates mine! (New Year’s Day).
