I was so disappointed that Watterson never licensed “Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs” to a breakfast cereal company. I would have bought some, though I would have passed on adding extra sugar
As a kid…I always poured in my mild a big portion of herscheys chocolate syrup…then five big heaping spoonfulls of nestles quick chocolate mix. Pretty thick stuff but yum!!!
Every once in a while here in Canuckistan there is a cereal that’s branded Tim Horton’s donuts. It always reminds me of “Chocolate frosted sugar bombs”. I once bought a box hoping I could find a way to ship it to Watterson.
Cocoa Puffs were the best: Two bowlfuls, then pour the (now) chocolate milk into a glass for the coup de grace. Now THAT’S what I called a “balanced breakfast.”
I’ve noticed the ads for children’s breakfast cereal: animated cartoon characters and 2-3 between scene changes. They usually end with Part (emphasis mine) of this complete breakfast that includes eggs, ham or bacon, toast and fruit.
If the kids ate the complete breakfast (of which the cereal is a minor portion), they would have a healthy meal. However, all they eat is the chocolate covered sugar bombs.
And after all these years… neither Kellogg’s, General Mills, or Post have marketed “Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs”. I’d buy a box (with some Metformin and insulin handy…)
Kellogg developed Frost Flakes to limit the amount of sugar put on cereal after watching his own Calvin dump numerous teaspoons of sugar on his Corn Flakes
Food companies have determined the average “bliss points” – the maximum break even point for fat, sugar, salt (the point just before a food becomes too sweet, greasy, salty) thus providing maximum enjoyment of fat, sugar and salt and they produce their food accordingly.
The premiere of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs! These early strips seem kind of crude when you know how beautiful and complex they would become, but they’re still very good.
I can’t say “Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs” without breaking out in smile and laughter! All I can think about is shopping for cereal when I was a kid and all of those cereals that were basically sugar covered objects! With the exception of Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, and Cheerios. I wonder how many kids would eat the Sugar Bombs if that cereal was real?! Talk about bouncing off the walls!
Cartoonists who draw kids tend to harken back to their own childhoods. By the time Calvin as first running in papers, the word ‘sugar’ was already disappearing from cereal names. It was still good satire, since the sugar content was still there. But numerous familiar cereals were renamed as ‘sugar’ became as alarming a word as ‘arsenic.’
I love the diabetes comments. while sugar can be harmful in huge doses I question the actual causation of diabetes. I have eaten a larger bowl of mini wheats every day for over 40 years. During 15 or so of those years I also drank 5-6 cans of Original coke. Every single day. Slightly overweight but no sign of diabetes ever. That said I’m 69 now and slowing down but still have the same bowlful every day.
The first appearance of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs! Heh, the last panel always reminded me of the way James from the “Pokémon” anime said “Aah! SWEET!” among catching sight of a beautiful maiden (really Gastly in disguise.)
Cal’s parents were constantly troubled by his antics. Maybe if they weaned him off of this stuff, he might have been a tad less rambunctious. I’ve said it before, I’m not impressed with their parenting skills. They have a fit about him watching TV yet buy this stuff that a slight step down from speed. And I know it’s just a comic strip and Waterston had a real issue with TV and it’s his strip, not mine
Since Calvin and I were around the same age when this comic was first published, I could eat sugar-coated sugary anything when I was that age, too. Nowadays, I don’t dare to because I don’t want to spend the whole morning in the bathroom, and my tastes are more aligned with Hobbes’ here.
I could never understand sugar cereal when I was a kid. They all had a weird chemical aftertaste. We always had brown sugar in the house so I could flavor the regular stuff.

Makes sense when you consider that not only is chocolate toxic to cats, but they can’t even taste sweet things due to being obligate carnivores.

I’ve heard that to children up to the age of about 6, there is no such thing as “too sweet.”
At my age, about half of what is advertised as dessert is too sweet.

I can only eat grape nuts cereal. It is about the only one that isn’t sugar with some grain in it so they can pretend it is cereal.

Fruit Loops with sugar scooped on, and croissants with butter slathered on. Probably explains some current character flaw.
