Trying to decipher the significance of Hendrix’s score on hole 6, if it’s a par 3 and he’s in the bunker and flies the green with his next shot then chips up and putts in that would be a bogey 4, if it’s a par 4 and drives the bunker, flies the green, chips up and putts in that’s a par, if it’s a par 5 and he drives a fairway bunker, air mails the green then get’s it up and down it would be a birdie 4, if he were lying 2 in the bunker, flies the green and gets it up and down that would be a par 5, face it Pale(y) if you get closed out on 16 you aren’t on the same level of a golfer as Hendrix and shouldn’t be playing him for money, worse if you are giving that scammer strokes, you are a bigger sap than you look to be
P3.5 as the Gilfather looks out over where all the bodies are buried, John Jawor foolishly blurts out “say Gil, people are staring to ask why is there all this mounding on the driving range when it used to be flat? What should I tell them?”
Gil-doh, C’mon, man!!! The significance of Hole 6—-score is never mentioned—- is it’s the front 9; play badly to set up the sucker . Then on the back 9 , after several presses to “get the bet right”, he pulls out on his A-game on the closing holes. Reminds me of “The Color of Money”.
I can hear Deano now. “Well Paley. What the hell happened between 6 and 16? Your fault for not slipping him a Mickey. Gotta get back to the Rio Bravo set. Angie wants another spanking.”
P1: Did MCC forget to pay the light bill? P2: MCC has to have one of the worst logos I’ve ever seen. Paley looks like a pizza delivery kid. P3: Former State Champ Coach Thorp rehearsing for his political future (like Tommy Tuberville) by not answering a direct question.
So, is this supposed to be a story about golfers gambling at the local CC? If so, …Zzzzzz….big deal….the gambling that goes on the CC in my town is crazy, but these guys have the $$ so they do it. Legend even has it that one guy got a new sports car a few years ago, courtesy of Michael Jordan himself because of gambling on the links. Members playing each other for cash is no business of John Jagwor and certainly not busy-body Gil. C’mon Rubin, you can do better
Didn’t we already have a golf hustler story several summers ago? And Molly(?) helped get revenge on the guy, after shooting down Steve Lefty Boone’s romantic overtures?
And speaking of hustling, you should be hustling over to Mopped Up Thorp right about now!
I’m still trying to figure out P2. What does hole 6 have to do with getting closed out on hole 16? Just because he overshot the green from a bunker on one hole means he can’t be good later?
Or, is this a thing…is he saying that Hendricks was on hole 16, he put his tee shot into the bunker on the hole 6 fairway, hit it over the 16th green from there, but then a chip and a putt for (presumably) par to close out the match?
Or is he saying Hendricks put it on the green from the bunker on hole 6, a tough shot. And then had his great hole 16. Wondering if the writer is saying “flew the green” meaning he blasted it a long way onto the green, as opposed to blasting it over the green?
It would be more realistic if in P2 Jawor replied with, “What the hell are you talking about?”
P4 – Gil replies with, “Why the hell are you asking me? You are here every day, during the entire golf season, and know the golfers better than anyone. I show up about 5 times a summer.”
I found this about Milford: “Milford … is a middle-class suburb across the Little Miami River from Indian Hill, home to mansions of senior Procter & Gamble executives. It’s also just a few miles from the home of the founder of Citizens for Community Values, a group that helped Cincinnati earn a national reputation for prudishness”
