It was just that he didn’t have much to say.

You’ll get nowhere with violence, but scratch his back just right and he’ll flap his gums all you want.

Naah. His friend is a ventriloquist.

Says the dummy…, Ok, I’m guilty, but leave my friend alone, he’s totally innocent, I give you my (his) word.

And in the next room two detectives are telling his friend “You might as well confess, your friend has told us everything!”
