My wife and I have always been responsible pet owners. Usually, we only have one dog. Our vet bills are considerable.
My cousin usually owns at least three dogs … and a couple of horses … and a bunch of other livestock. He and his wife have no children which is a good thing. The money they would have spent on a college tuition or two goes to supporting their local veterinarian.
