Yes! Let’s all sit out in the cold in front of a roaring file. Then we could know what a caveman felt like. Roasting on one side and freezing on the other! 8^ )
Well….since we haven’t done much traveling in the last two years, we rented a cabin by the Buffalo Nation River a couple of months ago. And they had this huge fire pit outside where we sat each night. We’d roast marshmallows, or maybe hot dogs, or use a cast iron pie cooker. And a fire pit was my wife’s request for Christmas. I’m not sure how often we’ll use it, but we did like it there. And whenever there are meteor showers, we end up sitting out in the backyard anyway, so a fire pit will be nice then.
This is like the indoor jacuzzi vs the outdoor hot tub. I’m not getting outside half dressed to climb into hot water with a cold head and then get back out into 30 degree weather to walk back into the house. Nope. I told hubby if he wants one he has to build a 3 season porch to put it into. Anyway, there are bears here.
Sitting around a campfire in the winter is nice. The heat radiates from the fire and keeps you warm. You roast marshmallows, cook hotdogs ( or is it the other way around?), make hot chocolate, or tea, and reminise about your life. It can be romantic if you want it to be. I love the outdoors in winter, always have.
With an indoor fireplace clothing is optional, but nudity is risky outdoors. Little things hide when they get cold and you don’t want to “roast” it either.
after reading all comments. Janis likes the idea of canoodling outdoors by a roaring fire. the reality is a lot less likely; this was a very hotly debated strip by any measure.

Janis is way ahead of Arlo. She knows there are far more nights not like that.

You might just try standing next to your BBQ Pit for a few minutes until the urge passes. Not as romantic but you can go inside and eat the hot dogs.

Janis is one heck of a lobbyist. Send her to Washington!

The last panel is my idea of a cozy, warm evening. Don’t need a fire outside, only inside!

Personally I like an indoor fireplace better. It’s so much more conducive to canoodling.

Watch that left hand Arlo. Coming close to leaving the family strip

Get one that you can make pizza in.

There is also winter camping. Once camped in a snow cave at the top of Santiam Pass. Once was enough.

Down here, outside is the only place it’s cool enough to have a fire, and then only in the winter, so fire pits are nice once in a while.

Smoke gets in your eyes, and clothes.

one of those things where the idea is better than the reality

I use one of those outdoor fireplaces every time I take my horse camping.

We have devastating fires in the summer. Hate being reminded of that in the winter. I’d really prefer that the fresh air outdoors be left smokeless.

I guess it’s OK if you are allowed to decide which side of your body you want facing the warmth. Personally I like central heating.

Yah. We have an outdoor fire pit with one of those chiminea thingies. But the fireplace in the library has a pair of inglenooks.

Then, when we realize the wind is making our backs cold, we could build some walls to deflect it.
Oh! After that, maybe a cover on top of the walls to stop the warm air from floating away. I call it “roof.”
Wait a minute… I think I’ve just invented something… I call it “The House” (patent pending).
