These two should be best pals, considering their shared talents, or lack thereof.

Brewster’s question assumes he’s still around in the future. Maybe he isn’t – he was killed today… Although that raises the question why future Dirk Raider sent an assassin back to kill a guy who wasn’t around then.

This reminds me of the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck conversation ending with Daffy saying, “Kill me, now, kill me, now.” And then Bugs blows Daffy’s head off. After Daffy puts himself back together, he looks at Bugs with total disdain and says, “You’re despicable.”

From the Star Trek Deep Space Nine Episode “Trials and Tribble-lations”:

DULMUR: Captain, why did you take the Defiant back in time?

    SISKO: It was an accident.

LUCSLY: So you’re not contending it was a predestination paradox?

DULMUR: A time loop. That you were meant to go back into the past?

    SISKO: Erm, no.

    DULMUR: Good.

    LUCSLY: We hate those.

Foolish Raider. He shoulda sent Percival Dunwoody for the job instead. Brewster wouldn’t have a chance against him.

If you have a reason to change the past, then you are trapped in paradox – but if you randomly change the past, you may escape the loop.

According to the “many worlds” hypothesis, in one universe Brewster was killed, in another it was Dirk Raider who was killed, and there is probably even one where they danced the merengue and got married.

Brewster, the answer to your question is that you had this very conversation with your assassin and convinced him that killing you was a useless exercise, so he didn’t bother trying.
