Maybe it’s the old refractive index of water making the duck’s position look bent.
Oddly enough, that’s pretty much the same way I spear fish. (Meaning I have never successfully speared a fish in my life.)

At a government training facility I frequented, there is a small pond in front of the main building where ducks and catfish reside. Once in a while, you’ll see a baby duck disappear.

He wasn’t really hungry, he just didn’t appreciate being mooned by the duck on the surface.
I was going to say, that really bites, but apparently, it doesn’t.
