My school report was on rattle snakes. Rattle snakes make great babysitters because they always shake their rattles which sound soothes babies and keeps them quiet. So my authority told me.
If I were a grade school kid in the Peanuts universe, my highlight of the school day would be waiting for Sally to give these reports. Also, I never noticed as a kid that she has Wolverine’s hairstyle.
There were no rock snakes where they lived. The Great Pumpkin came and drove them all out which is why we wear orange on Great Pumpkin Day. Somehow, the parades and orange beer hasn’t caught on yet.
The last panel brings back memories. My older sister was quite a character in school and any time I got the same teacher she had they would always ask me “Are you Barbara’s brother?”
We used to tell our cousin (who lived with us and was deathly afraid of snakes) that we had “snow snakes” in our area. Once day we attached a fake snake to a fishing reel, laid it in the snow near the sidwalk, and hid around the corner waiting for her to come home. We scared the…rocks…out of her!
Linus is afraid of things because his older sister Lucy uses violence to cope. Hence the blanket. He is imaginative but not inquisitive with adults, so he makes up a lot of stuff.
Had an English Lit teacher my senior year, that remembered my brother from 8 yrs prior. He asked: " Do you have a brother named * ? Heh, heh, heh!" It was an interesting year.

Rock snakes, queen snakes and gila monsters! Linus lived in fear, but that’s understandable with Lucy as an older sister.

But Rock Snakes protect the pumpkins in the Pumpkin Patch to maintain their sincerity. Surely all know this, Linus says it is so.

Linus wasn’t always the brainy, soft-spoken know-it-all we know and love today.

I thought they were ‘queen snakes’. And this was one of Linus’s few examples of not always acting so smart.

So, who is teaching these things to Linus? I’m not convinced it’s Lucy. It’s probably some older cousins playing pranks.

Why was Linus so misinformed? This classic story arc explains it, beginning here:
