Many years ago, I lived in a small Okanagan town. A few miles up a side road, there was a pipe coming out of a hillside which a good many residents would visit to get their drinking water, claiming it was better than the chloramine-laced city water. Eventually, the health department came and tested the water and put a stop to it- it was run-off from a cow pasture.
Very reminiscent of of a Bill Mauldin cartoon from the WW2 era of a group of soldiers drinking from a stream and filling a canteen, when another soldier upstream is holding up his wet socks and asking “Anyone have some more soap?”
I backpacked in the mountains as a young man. One of the first things I was taught was there is always a carcass of some sort decomposing upstream. Or how do you think fish reproduce (I cleaned the wording up) in the water? Always use water purification tabs or a backpackers water filter when drinking stream water if you don’t want the trots.
Years ago, while working on a forest fire, water was scarce and for lunch we boiled some eggs and then used that water to make tea. One of the workers refused the tea because the eggs came out of a chicken’s butt.
But to the cartoon.. It was that natural water that gave us immunity to many ailments that today we take pills for. On the other hand.. tis hard to find “natural” water anymore as most is contaminated by unnatural stuff.

Yeah, people will drink lake water but they won’t kiss the fish they catch. It’s so unfair to the fish!
