Often happens in the local market. Some short arthritic elder can’t reach the top shelves…….wait that’s me.

And as we age, we start to gradually get shorter…

And I’ve never been tall at any point in my life. (sigh)

People often get short in height and in temper. Instead of fussing and fuming, just ask for a little help. Turns out that kindness and respect are actually just a two way street that can begin at either end of the block.

When my son (6’-4") was with me at the store, any number of vertically challenged folks would ask him for help and he happily obliged.

Pluggers shrink as they age. I’m an inch shorter than I used to be but can still reach the top self in the stores.

My local “superstore” actually added another shelf in their recent renovation. 4 shelves up to 5, and the top shelf blocks light making it dreary in the store now. They also added a row making the aisles tighter. NOT an improvement in my book.

Ask for help, and provide someone a moment to feel good about themselves with a kindness and being needed.

It’s definitely the shelves. Stores are cramming more stuff in and not caring about short people.

We oldsters do get shorter (in my case because of not just bone thinning, but a broken back). But shelves are higher than they used to be in many stores. And people also are getting taller in general. My tall brothers have sons who are taller than they are. My 5’ 4" mother would look like a midget if she were still here and mingled among her grandchildren and great-grandchildren! But as she told us kids when we outgrew her in height, “You may be bigger than me, but you’re not too big to spank!”

I am 5’1", husband is 5’5" – everything is too high for us. In our kitchen I can reach the bottom shelf of 3 of our 4 kitchen cabinets. He reach the second shelf of them. I need a step to reach the shelves and he needs for the third. To reach the 4th cabinet or any higher shelves I need to climb on a chair – and for the top shelves in any of the closet I have to climb on the counter or stove (while turned off of course). And we only have one lower cabinet.

I keep a one step under the kitchen table. I put my feet on it while eating (feet do not touch the floor while seated in most chairs) and kick it around the kitchen to where it is needed.

We do have a couple of “grabbers” to reach soft items elsewhere in the house without climbing up, also have one in our small RV (class B aka Chevy van conversion).
