Coming Soon 👀 At the beginning of April, you’ll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
This one is either proof that Anne was taking care of April for free, OR an indication that the hostess position pays a lot more than Elly was paying. However, I do like the way Elly is justifying Anne’s reasons for taking the job in terms that would apply to Elly and not to Anne. After all, Elly’s position as assistant to the assistant to the librarian definitely falls in the categories of a job taken because Elly “needed the change and needed to get out” and not “needed the money.”
Work at a Job has always paid more in the long run that in-home daycare of only one child on a sporadic basis. Most in-home daycare operations need to have several active customers to even begin to make it worth the hassle.
Well that makes sense. I figure that as much as 90% of people who go out looking for a job do so because they need money. Why does Elly look so surprised by hearing that? Ahh! Lifestyles of the super rich! If Elly is so rich, why can’t she just hire a live-in nanny?
https://www.gocomics.com/forbetterorforworse/2020/11/27Okay, this strip clearly states that Elly was in fact paying Anne to babysit April. It probably wasn’t very much since Elly only works part time herself. So a full time job even if she started at minimum wage would pay more. So can we please end all they stuff about how Elly wasn’t paying Anne anything, it’s getting old.
This is clearly supposed to be a shocking revelation. But isn’t working because you need money about as close to a universal experience as our society has?
Ellie and John can afford to have an addition built onto their home, which even back when this strip first came out, was costly. Contrast that with Anne needing more money. I think the differences in their economic situations just hit Ellie upside the head.
Also, notice how Ellie’s first comment on entering Anne’s home is all about herself and her situation with April. In the last panel, I think she just realized that Anne’s decision was about ANNE’s needs, not hers (Ellie).

If Elly had paid Anne for baby-sitting, she wouldn’t have to pay for day care.
As they say: what goes around, comes around.

That is usually the reason someone gets a job—money. Not the love of working let me tell you.

No! I think she realises that she has been taking advantage of her being there and never gave a thought about paying her
