When folk assumed that a phone conversation was meant to be private, which, by definition, it ought to be, as you are speaking to one person in particular, not the masses. I miss those days!
I remember standing in line 35 years back for a phone in boot camp after hell week for our timed 1 minute call to tell our family that we survived the first week and still there. I think that was the last time I used a pay phone.
Used to a lot of Military TDY Bases had a row of Pay Phones, When I first got in, there was only one or two near the barracks, and it was like a box you had some privacy, new ones only covered your upper torso. (I remember a funny part of the SUPERMAN Movie of 1978, Clark Kent goes to one of the upper torso phone booths to change into Superman, looks confused and goes in the swinging doors of a building and comes out as Superman.
This was barely still a thing when I was in college. My girlfriend did a semester abroad, and I had to call her dorm, where I got the Grumpy Scotsman, who would have to go and get her to come to the only phone on her dorm floor.
Remember that one phone for the entire dorm floor too well back in 1972. There were 3 of us named Kathy (good old boomer name!). When someone called for Kathy not knowing the last name, the questions were “Blonde or brown hair?” Then “Big or little?” if the answer was blonde. Somehow, the right Kathy always got to the phone. I was the little blonde.
When we were at grad school at Purdue, the phone numbers were recycled from year to year as the student population changed, with no waiting period between, and in married student housing we got one that had been a frat’s payphone like this the year before. The drunk calls we got in the middle of the night… Endless. And not fun.

Janis stop trying to gaslight Arlo and admit“I think I love you”.Is it too early in the morning for a bit of Partridge Family ?

What year is this supposed to be? I was in college in the late ’70s early ’80s and there was a phone in my dorm room.
bobpeters61 over 2 years ago
Early ’70s I guess. She must live in a better dorm. The payphone is pushbutton instead of rotary dial.

Didn’t Janis already have the “let’s just be friends” talk? Why does she feel it’s so important to reiterate it?

anyone remember phone phreaking? Most college dorms during that time had at least one doctored payphone or someone who could manipulate the system.

I crammed 4 years of college into 5 years. It was the best time of my life. Sadly, I ran out of money and had to get a job.

The concept of a shared phone will confuse many.

We had phones in the individual dorm rooms, in addition to the payphones in the lobby.
After running up a huge long distance tab a roommate dropped out & left me holding the bag.

Seeing this triggers a memory of a unique odor associated with phone booths. Is this accurate?

I remember the soup can hair curlers! Our dorm rooms each had their own phone, but you had to pay for the service.
