That’s OK. I don’t take your tennis seriously, either.

It will be easy Snoopy. It’s just like the old sing-a-long’s you saw in the movie theaters before the matinee. Just follow the bouncing ball.

Cheer up, Snoopy. It’s not your fault.

Sometimes it’s good to get a reminder that Charlie Brown isn’t the only loser in the world of Peanuts.

Snoopy, just relax and focus on the plays, rather than the goal of winning.

That’s SERIOUSLY. Schulz doesn’t usually make such mistakes (or I haven’t noticed).

Still say Snoop should take up pickleball instead.

The same could be said about golf. People claim they play it for “relaxation.”

You know, I really hate doing this, but I feel it’s necessary. Snoopy’s tennis is a model of our nationhood. Snoopy concludes he SHOULDN’T take his tennis so seriously. But, when did he ever take his tennis SERIOUSLY? When did he ever practice just hitting a ball against as wall? When did he just work on his form sans ball to make sure his approach was alright? When did he even work on arm strength to make his upper body stamina up to snuff? These are some of the things that SERIOUS tennis players do. And like Snoopy, we of the nation’s players fail to take nationhood SERIOUSLY.

The opening line of the Star Spangled Banner, the lyrics we sing with such gusto, written by Francis Scott Key, was a question about his nation’s having the right stuff, whether we could take this nation SERIOUSLY. Really look at the words, “Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light what so proudly we last hailed by the twilight’s last gleaming?” The whole of the first verse of our anthem is like that, a question of whether we had the chops for building, for holding a nation. It’s not until the fourth verse that we get the affirmation.

So like Snoopy who bemuses about taking SERIOUSLY his game of tennis, do we as the citizens of this great country, this great experiment, the great game, take it all SERIOUSLY enough to make us a nation?

At least he didn’t cry like a child. That injured ankle at the French Open yesterday was hard to watch.

Many years ago I gave my boss a poster of Snoopy bouncing a tennis ball and the caption read “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s where you place the blame.”

Just don’t twist your ankle running for the ball
