The snake is not feeling it because he’s grounded.

Well, you need a better static position. Get deep into a cave and hunker down.

I remember seeing a program on lightning which showed people getting pictures of themselves taken with their hair standing on end like this just minutes before being struck by lightning.

Sadly, there is very little to prevent us from being grounded when lightning is present. You also don’t want to be under a tree; they are great at “attracting” lightning but not nearly as good at conducting it as a nice, juicy human body standing under it.

Where can you find refuge from lightning (note it is not refuge from rain)? Imagine a ball 100 meters/yards in diameter above you. If it touches you before it touches objects around you – even large rocks qualify – you should find a better place. Keep your feet close together and don’t sit on anything. You want the storm to be over before your life is.

When we were living in coastal Carolina area, I was out on the beach one day and all my hair started standing on end. Eerie feeling, but I hightailed it off the beach that day just before a huge squall came rolling in.

There is enough electricity flowing naturally through the ground at all times that it can be used for mineral exploration.

No safety being on the ground. Huge currents flow through the ground when there’s a strike nearby and part of that current will pass through anything on the ground.
