/// She left home by the gate to the stream.

Looking back, her past seemed like a dream.

    She climbed into his rowboat,

    but her lover’s a showboat

who’d been cut from the Yale rowing team.

/// Showing off, he rowed using one oar,

but his dinghy kept veering toward shore.

    And his curses were loud,

    quickly drawing a crowd.

Their elopement’s a secret no more.

    It’s owned by a Lord/

    And once she’s on board/

If you think he will join her, you’re daft.

Yes ma’am, it’s a water view, gated community, very nice, just like you asked. You will grow accustomed to the nudism. Just hop on in there and join the crowd. When in Rome…

    The Elopement

    Paste (including the quote marks)

"Category:Paintings by Edmund Blair Leighton" site=commons.wikimedia.org

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, Duckduckgo, Ecosia, and Yandex search engines) in the address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and click first Category: found, and once there, find Elopement in the text of that webpage, and click its link for info and links that point to more info about this roughly legal letter size painting.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by merely (⌘- or Ctrl-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s THROWBACK THURSDAY: MASTERPIECE #1927 (4/9/18) (June 15, 2022) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment. I have added a comment there pointing to the blog entry with the artist info I used to point to here. So far 42 works, by this artist, have been used here (49 times total, including 7 repeats with this Throwback Thursday), the April 9, 2018, strip being its first use (the artist info URLs included in my comment there are here links in the aforementioned blog comment).

From a matter of perspective on 4/9/18:

@Call me Ishmael was not beat-boxing, rhyming, or doing anything in the mo-rn-rn-in’ yet.

We didn’t realize what we were missing, as *’@Solstice*1947’* and @Bookworm had not joined yet.

my apologies for lack of orgininality, but the first thing that came to mind is the lyrics of “Down to the waterline” by Dire Straits…

Sweet surrender on the quayside/You remember we used to run and hide/In the shadow of the cargoes I take you one time/And we’re counting all the numbers down to the waterline//

Near misses on the dog leap stairways/French kisses in the darkened doorways/A foghorn blowing out wild and cold/A policeman shines a light upon my shoulder//

Up comes a coaster fast and silent in the night/Over my shoulder all you can see are the pilot lights/No money in our jackets and our jeans are torn/Your hands are cold but your lips are warm//

She can see him on the jetty where they used to go/She can feel him in the places where the sailors go/When she’s walking by the river and the railway line/She can still hear him whisper/Let’s go down to the waterline//

    Come on
