“Friends are the flowers in the garden of life, beginning with a seed of trust, nurtured with laughter and tears, growing into loyalty and love.” — Nishan Panwar
The duo’s friendship is one of the most heartwarming parts of the strip, especailly after reading Connie’s bio on the website recently (Several characters have in depth bios that, if you don’t mind the spoilers for the rest of the strip, are in depth and engaging), as there’s one part of her long painful history that underlines why the two are so close: Shortly after Laurence was born Connie.. was not in the best place. She was living with her judgmental mom who was embarassed by laurence being born out of wedlock and rubbed Connie’s situation in her face, her baby dad had abandoned her , and she had shut out her friends.. until Elly tracked her down. Elly ended up being the first person besides Connie herself to show genuine happiness Laurence existed. When Connie was at her lowest, Ellie was there and the two will always bet here for each other. Also for those curious about the mentioned divorce, since it dosen’t really spoil anything in strip and I wasn’t even aware of it till it popped up in said profile, in backstory (likely to reconcile the fact Laurence’s dad was changed to have left before he was born), Connie breifly married a man named Paul as she was desperate to have a partner.. and her turned out to be a controlling, sexist and racist ##$$%% who treated Laurence like crap, so it didn’t last long.
I seem to remember something about Lynn Johnston originally intending for Connie to be a feminist antagonist to Elly’s traditional wife/mother role… But it didn’t quite work out that way.
“The holy passion of Friendship is of so sweet and steady and loyal and enduring a nature that it will last through a whole lifetime, if not asked to lend money.” ― Mark Twain
I’m remembering when Liz was supposed to go off to college and Lynn suddenly yanked her back for one more year of high school.Supposedly because she had “forgotten” that Canada has one more year of high school than America.
There were four people at the wedding of Lynn’s daughter, the bride, groom, preacher, and Lynn Johnston. Sure does not look like many friends to count in real life.
