He almost makes it sound like recess is the roller-coaster ride called life.

Wouldn’t the other kids have eaten the same lunch? If it was a typical school lunch with all that sugar many of the students will be type 2 diabetics by 16.

Where’s the merry-go-round? That’s the piece of playground equipment that could really get you nauseated, especially when the big 6th graders got it spinning.

Yeah, all that once common place playground equipment we played on that is now banned. Swings with a plank for a seat, the monkey bars, carrousels, tetherball, the teetertotter etc… There was one carrousel with a tall central pole and long pipes that came down and out from the top to support the seat ring, shaped like a fir tree. The whole thing pivoted from the point at the top of the pole and, since the inside of the seat ring was open, it was also free to sway from side to side. Our goal was to get it going fast enough and wobbling enough (had to put all of us on one side to do this) that the seat ring scraped the pole as it rotated. Still wonder why we never got seriously hurt on that thing.

Recess – there’s nothing like it in adult life. Run a mile wearing street clothes, and 20 minutes later you’re in math class.

I have been reading the comments on yesterday’s strip. I made a belated reply yesterday to a reply made to me on Saturday’s strip as I hadn’t read the comment on Saturday. A couple of people complained that I was commenting on something irrelevant to the strip that day.

Sometimes I have the time to read Calvin and Hobbes twice on the same day but even then comments are made after I have read these wonderful strips a second time. Because of this, I sometimes make a belated reply the following day.

On “Red and Rover” recently, I made a belated reply the following day and was criticised there as well. I explained why the following day and someone replied, “I understand. You had good intentions.” I hope that some of the readers of my favourite strip will be as understanding as that commentator. “Andy Capp” is my second favourite strip. “Red and Rover” is in strong competition with “The Wizard of Id” for third place.
