There’s a park near me that has a long, steep, grassy hill. A very popular activity for kids of many ages is sliding down the hill on blocks of ice. I try to make it a point to ask a nearby parent how many dollars they have tied up in toys, and then pointing out that the difference between those toys and blocks of ice would have funded their college education. Probably not as true now as it was when I started saying it, but fun anyway.
When my kids were young, they would go to the appliance store and drag home a refrigerator box and play with it till it collapsed. The neighborhood kids were in the yard everyday having a ball with the simplest thing! I would give them juice and snacks, sometimes popcorn. YAY!!!
Kids these days would be bored with an empty box, unless of course, Nintendo, X-Box or Playstation had a video game of an empty box with imaginative scenarios that the player could use the box for.

It’s nice to see Nerwin being encouraged to use his imagination.
Too many kids (IRL and the comics) aren’t!!

When I was a kid, we used cardboard as a sled on grassy hills.

We got a washer/dryer set once. The boxes were blue. The blue was not rain-proof, except on one’s skin.

Had a large cardboard box as a kid I played in. Fun times.

Little kids are like that. Forget the toy, give me the box.

Have a few blackmail pictures of the boys playing in boxes when they were young, so cute…and so embarrassing when shown to potential girlfriends.

Broom-Hilda is so right. It is often the most simplest toys are the most fun.
