Yesterday the comic strip was making a political comment about the bus fare price increase and today we get an indictment of the Canadian school lunch. My understanding is that Canadians have real issues with their school lunch program because there is no national school food program, like we have in the USA.
What’s the name of that pasta that looks like oversized grains of rice? I was at a university cafeteria once, asked which variety of pasta I’d order, and said “I’ll take the rice.” Someone next to me said “It isn’t rice!” (I hope that made his day, being able to correct me like that…)
Personally, I liked the Friday menu at my high school. One of its offering was a ‘submarine sandwich’ for 50 cents—normally ate two of them (they weren’t that big) ! ! ! !
When I attended Edwin Markham Junior High in San Jose in the late 50s, my mother also worked in the cafeteria. She said that they had to pick out the wormie beans before cooking them. Also we called Tuna casserole, Ruinthetuna instead of tunaruna.
I remember my kids loved pizza day or lasagna day at school. All other days they made their own lunches. I don’t think they liked the desserts, because they took their own from home every day.
Since Lynn Johnston loves puns, this could be a strip: the cafeteria only served liver and onions, which Rhetta’ brother hates, then Michael and the others could get in their digs with this taunting song:
Back in the 50’s in Montreal, my first two years of HS you took your lunch with you, then we moved and the new HS had a cafeteria. I still have fond memories of the meatloaf and can’t remember fries ever being served, but I could be wrong.l
The burgers my school had were the worst things ever! Super dry, did not even begin to have a texture that could be associated with meat and tasted horrible. No amount of fixins could help ’em!

And then after school—pizza and malts.

I can remember when then First Lady Michelle Obama tried to encourage healthy eating by having kids grow their own vegetables in a common garden.
But the plan backfired because the kids hated what they grew, and wouldn’t eat them!!
BTW, I don’t blame them—I hate veggies, too!! LOL

Sometimes, you can only offer them what you have, when they ask for what they want.

When I went to school, you got what the cafeteria wanted to make — no choice. Menus were published at the end of the prior week.

Why change now? Enjoy before all those burgers and fries go to their waistline.

Why should Michael worry about what he eats? If he has a heart attack, OHIP will take care of it.

We had a regular lunch line and burger line and sometimes they added pizza to both lines.
