If one of my parents had told me to empty the trash or do another chore, I’d have best gotten cracking on it unless I was otherwise engaged in another chore, or I risked the discipline which was almost certainly to have followed. My parents weren’t abusive, they just expected prompt compliance.

With the exception of his trash can, his room is admirably neat for a boy his age. And at least he seems to know how to use a trash can.
