Among Native Americans of the West, women generally dressed in a modest manner. So it was when one village council realized Frederic Remington continually (and oftentimes inaccurately) painted their warriors in skimpy loincloths destined perhaps to corrupt their females’ sensibilities — that they burned reproductions of his paintings in protest, analogous to later burnings of books considered socially offensive in America and Europe. These “smoke signals” were indeed messages — from outraged village elders.
Ironically, in later years the European tribes that infested the West spawned outrageously immodest fashions in female attire. Although descendants of Frederic Remington might deny it, is it possible that one of them instituted the notorious “Frederick’s of Hollywood” chain of stores (now on-line only) that offer slinky fantasy sexualized clothing and accessories to modern decadents?
