āIf Santa falls for this,ā once said Calvin, while making a Santa letter for his ābrotherā Melville, āIāll add a new brother every year!ā
Reminds me of a couple of quotes from other cartoon characters:
Charlie Brown (to Lucy when she offers to let him kick the football in "Itās The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown): āI donāt mind your dishonestly half as much as I mind your opinion of me! You must think Iām stupid.ā
Jon Arbuckle (in response to Garfield blaming Pooky for knocking his fern off the window sill in the 2/24/1979 strip): āHis lying to me isnāt half so upsetting as the credit heās giving my intelligence.ā
Santa has to be thinking along similar lines here.

Funny thing is that this could be true. There was a TV special about Garfield getting lost and meeting his mother at the restaurant where he was born.
