/// Gianni’s goal in The Poetry Reading

is seduction, and he is succeeding.

The two girls’ hearts beat quick

    from each blue limerick.

He’ll soon teach them the meaning of breeding.

Jeanette and Virginia, two well-brought young ladies, nevertheless giggled at the saucy excerpts that young Tom quoted from “Joe Miller’s Joke Book.”

    Examples:

    3. Joe Miller sitting one day in the window at the Sun Tavern in Clare Street, a fishwoman and her maid passing by, the woman cried, “Buy my souls, buy my maids.” Ah! you wicked old creature, said honest Joe, what are you not content to sell your own soul, but you must sell your maid’s too?

    83. A lady’s age happening to be questioned, she affirmed she was but forty, and called upon a gentleman who was in company, for his opinion: Cousin, said she, do you believe I am in the right when I say I am but forty? I am sure, madam, replied he, I ought not to dispute it; for I have constantly heard you say so for above these ten years.

Lord Fontaine thought himself to be the most entertaining of young men. However, little did he realize the two young ladies were not laughing with him, but rather, at him. His fly was unbuttoned.

    The Poetry Reading

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Vittorio Reggianini" site=commons.wikimedia.org

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Yandex search engines) in the browser address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and choose the first Category: found, and once there find the text string Poetry, and click its link for info and links that point to more info about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting.

Again, a larger strip image is shown by (Ctrl- or right-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #3031 (November 18, 2022) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu (even larger if you trim what’s after .png from the URL). I have added a comment there (awaiting Mr. Melcher’s approval) pointing to info about this artist I used to point to here. First work by this artist used here.
