So, I was about 100 pages into a science fiction novel about a psychiatrist who is called on to counsel and AI. Then I read a story about this new AI that’s already in the schools…I need reality to be less science fiction-y.
Today I have seen a headline that schools are going to have to change teaching methods to combat such cheating.
In the “early days” of computers, I worked for a guy who was a “database broker”. A Ph.D. candidate hired him to do searches on proprietary databases from which he rented access. Although warned not to submit the report as her own work, she did so anyway. Fortunately, the fraud was exposed because the differences in style were so easily detected. She had basically “tanked” her academic career.
Don’t cheat yourself. You are learning how to learn, not just facts.

Wished they’d had that when I was teaching. You wouldn’t believe the c*ap papers I had to read from semi-literate students.
And the ones who just copied off the web and hoped I didn’t know how to Google™?
“Did you write this yourself?”
“Every word. This is my work!”
“Then why was it posted on the internet four years ago?”
“Uh, Gee… I dunno.”

I’ve thought for sometime that there should be a prequel and a sequel for Treasure Island. Maybe AI can do that for us.

My students can’t spell nor use proper grammar. Their handwriting is nearly unreadable.

Some schools and workplaces are banning using ChatGPT. But, how is that enforced? Does ChatGPT have a searchable database of it’s results?
