My mom had a day care center, usually fullâ26 kids aged 2 and up. There were four rooms, each one with varying amouts of play stuff. Before lunch sheâd call out, âLetâs pick up.â Within four or five minutes all the kids (and not my mom) had put everything away, leaving all the rooms clear for lunch, nap time cots, quieter nap time play for non-nappers, etc. No drama, because Mom had built the ultimate no-drama tool: As newbies on Day #1, each child had learned This Is The Way Itâs Done Here by absorbing the calm, no-drama way all 25 other kids simply put everything away. Nobody got upset, whined, cried, pouted, argued, etc.; that kind of thing Just Wasnât Done. Peer pressure. :-)
Wanda and Darryl should have been teaching the kids how to clean up after themselves from the very beginning. Darryl, however, should already know how to be responsible and clean up after himself. Heâs supposed to be an adult.
Nag the kids, theyâre part of your responsibility as a parent.
Darryl, on the other hand, is not your responsibility. Heâs an adult and he knows what he should do. He should be prepared to take the consequences if he doesnât. Donât iron his clothes or pick up after him. If something he does makes your life more difficult, then ask him to take care of it.

Mom gave up and let the guys live upstairs. Sheâd put clean clothes on the first stair step. She and my sister stayed downstairs.
