Reminds me of a news story a couple of years ago, where some poachers were running from game wardens in an African savannah, on a moonless night, and right into a pride of lions. Next day all that was found was a piece of shirt fabric, and one shoe!!!
Not a folk song! The original version was written by Solomon Linda in isiZulu and recorded in 1939. It was later translated into English – apparently badly – and labeled traditional to cheat Linda of the royalties he was due as songwriter.
For younger readers, The Tokens hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in December, 1961 with ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. The song has since become a pop culture icon.
It doesn’t really matter, because “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is actually a song about African independence. The lion is a metaphor for Africa, whose countries were no longer content to be colonies of European powers.

Clinical accuracy is not necessary for silliness. But your next meal may taste funny.

Now I have this song in my head, and the urge to sing it out loud is just a whim away, a whim away, a whim away…
