I like that! You only need to look out for the stuff thatâs in front of you and not what might fall on top of you. Because itâs already fallen. Unlike the âfalling rock zoneâ. Cool!
In the 60âs, we were enjoying our travels along Canadaâs Gaspe Peninsula Highway that runs between the foot of the cliffs and the ocean. Some signs read âebouli.â Not being readers of French, it took a while to translate that to âscree,â then realize it warned of rocks falling onto the highway. As the only escape from actual falling boulders would have been a quick right turn into the ocean, we slowed down and spent more time watching the cliffs than the other scenery.
Reminds me of a tale my grandfather told us when we were young: the ghost of an Indian Chief was known the haunt the highways that now ran through his beloved mountains. They put up signs to warn drivers to be on the lookout for the ghost. âWatch For Falling Rocksâ
Itâs hard to legitimately say that you ran into the rock because you couldnât read the sign. The rock itself, because of its size, should have been enough of a sign. (If you didnât notice the rock in your way, you also wouldnât have been able to read the sign.)
Donât take the road for granted. It has been ten years since part of Arizona highway 89 south of Page slid away. The highway had to be reconstructed more firmly on the hillside, sixty feet further east of the original location. IIRC one person was hurt and another killed when it let go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPrm7FrZrwM
Southern Californians scoffed, âyou call that a landslide?â
definitive proof that aliens were among us and left material that was so strong it could withstand the impact of a stone weighing 2 tons . piercing through it and only becoming slightly dented .
Thereâs a week or so where Hart just goes nuts with the sign posts. Most hilarious one was BC walks up to one face down on the ground, picks it up, and the sign saysâŠâPut me DOWN!â

The inspiration for the orange traffic cone. Unfortunately it would not come into common use until the first DOT was trialed.
