I finally got around to watching, on DVD, the 2021 movie Cyrano, starring Peter Dinklage. In the film, Cyrano’s gross deviation from the ideal of physical handsomeness wasn’t a huge nose (as in 1987’s Roxanne, with Steve Martin) but dwarfism. The performances were fine, and the costuming was excellent. The sets (as you’d expect from an adaptation of a stage musical) were quite limited and thus only semi-realistic. The score was uniformly insipid and uninspiring.
I quite admire Dinklage’s work, ever since I first saw him in The Station Agent, and I’m sorry that he can’t seem to find roles other than tired tropes like the munchkins in The Wizard of Oz or the ooompa loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. For a little person, something like the epic TV series Game of Thrones must’ve seemed like manna from heaven.

I always worried when I read ads for, “Cosmetic surgery, 30% off.” I can’t afford to lose thirty percent of any body part.
