Watterson said in The Anniversary Book he was disappointingly crushed when he had a similar contest as a schoolboy when he added Snoopy and the judges disallowed that even though he put in a lot of effort into making the poster.
âWatch Out For School Buses!!âBy far the most dangerous vehicles, constantly stopping and starting, and for some reason always on the road when kids are going to schoolâŠ
Ooooh, this is a great story arc! Itâs loosely based off when Bill Watterson was in grade school, and he got disqualified from a traffic safety poster contest due to his featuring a copyrighted character â i.e. Snoopy from âPeanutsâ. And that Calvin, of course, has âthe opposite problemâ from what Bill had.
I hated poster contests in school. (1960s) You werenât given a choice to not do one . I didnât do any of them and got an Fâs. Mom and Dad werenât happy.
