The man with the wig is called Eric. It would be better if he had been called Ernie. On “The Morecambe and Wise Show”, it was Eric Morecambe who kept joking that Ernie Wise wore a wig.
There used to be a single-panel cartoon in the Daily Mirror called Eric and Ernie which showed cartoon figures with Eric and Ernie’s photographic faces pasted on to them. One cartoon that I remember had Eric as a psychiatrist and Ernie as his patient.
Eric: You’re insane!
Ernie: I demand a second opinion.
Eric: All right, you’re ugly too.
I later read that Eric and Ernie had appeared in Buster Comic during the 1960s. They mentioned that in their joint autobiography “Eric and Ernie”. Ernie says that the comic strip in Buster was better than their three feature films at that time – The Intelligence Men, That Riviera Touch and The Magnificent Two. Benny Hill was also appearing as a comic strip character in Buster at around the same time and was drawn by Reg Parlett who would draw the Buster strip for ten years from 1974 to 1984. As has been mentioned before, Buster was originally billed as “Buster – Son of Andy Capp” and this would be revived in the 1990s.
When I was reading Buster in the 1970s, Dick Emery hosted the Airfix page and his photograph was pasted onto it. I remember thinking that a comic strip version of The Dick Emery Show featuring his characters such as Mandy, The Bovver Boy and The Vicar would have been very good.
I do wish Affie was here to tell us that today’s strip is a repeat and not funny. It really is a poor offering. Where ever he is, I hope he’s staying hydrated!
