Wikipedia cites the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that states the day honors Washington, Lincoln, and all the other presidents. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidents’_Day

Presidents Day was created to combine celebrating Lincoln’s birthday ( which used to be celebrated on 12th) and Washington’s birthday (which was celebrated on 22nd) into just one federal holiday because having both days as days off for federal employees plus February being short month (quicker monthly deadline ) screwed up processing of monthly paperwork to the max especially with population growing at greater speed .

Caulfield is correct. Few people can answer that question in a way that satisfies most of us. The simplest one being there are good ones and bums, and each citizen has his/her own ideas as to who fits either description. Like picking a life partner, sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw. Presidents Day exists because corporatists recoiled at the idea of workers getting two holidays in one month.

Same reason most businesses don’t give Veteran’s Day off, anymore.

We used to have a day for Lincoln, then a separate day for Washington about 10 days later. Eventually it was decided to just have on day for both and call it Presidents Day. Some places still observe both days as holidays.

    We are the mediocre Presidents.

You won’t find our faces on dollars or on cents.

    There’s Taylor, there’s Tyler, there’s Fillmore and there’s Hayes,

    There’s William Henry Harrison.

    I died in thirty days!

    We… Are… The…

    Adequate, forgettable,

    Occasionally regrettable

    Caretaker Presidents of the U.S.A.!

Presidents Day was intended to observe only George Washington’s Birthday. It’s officially called “Washington’s Birthday (Observed)” in the Uniform Mondays Holiday Act of 1971. The Father of Our Country deserves his own day. He led the American army in winning our Independence from Great Britain, presided over the Constitutional Convention, served as our First President, and willingly gave up power after his second term to become an ordinary citizen again.

If Washington deserves his own day for winning independence, Lincoln deserves his day for keeping the country together vs. the slave-owners.
