Hard to pin down exact numbers but I’ve seen claims for over 3,000 active satellites and about just as many inactive. That is all history now. Plans were to launch several thousand more quite regularly. I wonder how it will pan out. As Arlo says, it’s creepy when you think about it.
I remember in the late fifties that we’d go out on our back patio after dark and look for the Echo 1 and 2 satellites to go overhead. The newspaper even published the time and direction to look every day.
I usually just look for the international space station. I do ham radio so I download signals from it and try to talk to the astronauts have not got to talk to them yet but I have downloaded many pictures with my radio
Thousands of internet satellites launched by Musk are already interferring with astronomers ability to make observations, and it’s only going to get worse.
There is so much junk circling our planet it’s a wonder they don’t start just crashing into each other and falling from the sky. All those invisible signals and energy waves pointing down at us must cause some damage in ways we aren’t aware of as yet. JMHO.
According to UCS, there are 6,542 satellites, out of which 3,372 satellites are active and 3,170 satellites are inactive, as recorded by 1st January, 2021.

Maybe all those satelites will block enough Sun light to compensate for global warming?

Without a powerful telescope, the geosynchronous ones appear as stars.

Also, only a very small percentage of human life understands how much our world is satellite dependent.

My father worked 3rd shift, he knew when to look for satellites. This was many years ago before there were 1000s of them.

Smartphones are scarier. I call them “NSA-approved personal surveillance devices.”
(Someone else might have mentioned that before in here, and I just stole his/her idea.)

I don’t see anything creepy about the fact that we are a spacefaring civilization. I think it’s wonderful.
