I looked this up recently and if there’s an earlier occurrence I couldn’t find it. I was also in the theater watching Buckaroo when I first heard it, and it was a fresh joke at the time.
People tend to forget what a loaded cast of actors that movie had. Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Ellen Barkin, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, Rosalind Cash, and Clancy Brown just to name a few.
Old vauedville routine. Joe: I can prove I’m not here. Sam: How? Joe: Am I in Chicago? Sam: No. Joe: Am I in New York City? Sam: No. Joe: So if I am not in Chicago or NYC, I must be someplace else? Sam: Yes. Joe: Well, if I am someplace else, I can’t be HERE!!
I had to look it up. Could be the 1984 movie, could be from the 1950s or 60s or 40s…. or maybe the 1400s. I think Buckaroo Bonzai made it popular. https://quoteinvestigator.com/2020/11/22/where-you-go/

I was way too young when I saw that movie, I’ve really got to rewatch it as an adult.

It has also been apocryphally attributed to Yogi Berra.

Originally attributed to PSU’s Jim Russell but dates back way before then in similar forms.

Jim Russell 1955, almost 30 years before the movie quoted it

I’m pretty sure the Firesign Theater had a similar quote on one of their albums in the early seventies.

Whether it originated with Buckaroo Banzai or not, everyone should go see that movie.

Apparently, Vince Lombardi wasn’t the first to say “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”, either.

Love the thought as I drive my ’75 MG Midget: “with these hydraulic brakes and Lucas electrics you can be assured of dying in the dark at high speed!”

I’ve always liked the version from Total Recall: The problem with every trip you go on is that the one thing that’s always the same is you.

“Buckaroo Banzai” is a lot more fun when viewed from the 8th dimension. So I’m told!
