Our guys left a trail of lights, open cabinet drawers, and empty boxes in the pantry. Worse thing was, when they reached 13, there was never a single leftover to be found.
There’s also the matter of light pollution. While ONE house may not make a difference, many lights at night can disorient nocturnal animals and severely limit our ability to see the night sky. Many people who live in cities have never seen the Milky Way, and see only about 10% of the stars.
I would make my kids come upstairs to their room and turn off the lights if I would catch it. They eventually learned and I think they do the same to their kids now
I grew up in the SF Bay Area which is served by PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric). When our Mom noticed a light was left on, she’d always say “what do you think, we own stock in the PG&E?” So it was quite a surprise when I was the executor of her Trust to find that… she owned stock in the PG&E! All three of us “kids” shared a smile thinking of her, and when we were growing up.
I had to remove the light in the pantry, because husband always turned on the light to open the fridge (that has a light) and then would leave it on when he left.

Good one gramps. Really old timey worry. With LED’s it doesn’t matter.

With LED light bulbs the difference between leaving all the lights on 24/7 and leaving them off 24/7 is probably less than $1 a day.
The only thing you are doing by turning them on and off is wearing out the switch (unless you have alexa do it for you).
Nonetheless, I’m in the habit of hitting the switch every time I leave the room.

Sometimes kids act as if the lights are on but nobody’s home.
