I’ve discovered why I have not been feeling well all week. I figured it out Thursday night when I started seeing a goopy discharge from my eyes. And my eyes were swollen, red, watery and sore. And they felt gritty like there was something in my eyes. If I saw a discharge from my cats’ eyes like what I had, I would have guessed it was conjunctivitis and I would have taken them to the vet. I was pretty sure I had conjunctivitis. I googled it. I wanted to know if my other symptoms could be from conjunctivitis. The low grade fever (is 100.4 considered low grade? That’s the highest I got), the sneezing, nasal congestion, sore throat, etc. I was even more confident in my diagnosis when my eyes were crusting shut. They are even a little crusty right now. But in the mornings, I wake up with my eyes pasted shut with the crust. So, I saw the vision center doctor at my Walmart yesterday. Yep, I have a bacterial infection (conjunctivitis) in both eyes. Part of what I read on google said, “Your eyes may feel gritty, watery or sticky and your eyelids may become swollen stuck together, especially in the mornings. You may also get flu-like symptoms such as a sore throat, fever, muscle aches and generally feel unwell”. I didn’t have muscle aches, but I’ve felt unwell all week. Another thing I read about it said you could have a runny nose and sneezing and I’ve had that. The doctor said this is contagious, yet he said I could still work. But I looked really horrible. Every co-worker who saw me was asking me if I was okay. My eyes were puffy, red and watery. I could not work like that. I told my assistant manager I’d have to go home. He agreed it was for the best because I looked so sick. I also said that I might not go to work Saturday either (I won’t) and he said that’s fine too.
Midnight (my first) would hear my car (my husband told me) & would wait nearby til I came in, then he would rush to me stop 2 feet in front walk casually around me with a look he hoped said"oh, are you here? I was doing my nightly run" . I worked evenings. After that I just starting giving cats treats when I got home. They (now just she) is usually waiting by the spot, or comes strolling soon after.
When i went to feed Jenny’s kitties yesterday one didn’t come out right away. That had me calling and worried until the little brat decided to come out.
No, cats very rarely come when they are called. Mine usually tell me to leave a message and they will get back to me later.
Completely off topic, I got the job as a translator I was hoping for. Now to go through the training! At the same time, I am training to become a virtual assistant. I’ll be keeping myself busy for the next couple of years!
Well, all my cats except Lucy (a bratty tortie who loved to escape outdoors and hide in the poison oak or go too on the roof!) have come when they are called. I’ve always wondered how they each learn they names.
I have never had a cat that didn’t come when called, except a few that hid in the closet during thunderstorms and would refuse to come out until all was clear.
With a new cat, I used it’s name all the time. Even if I just walked past the new cat, I would look at her and say her name in a friendly tone. Petting, the cat, I would sing or whisper her name.
It is like I might have Tourettes, because whenever I see a cat, I yell “KITTY!” So one October while visiting Salem MA, a strange black cat strolled around a distant street corner — KITTY! It heard me and came running up for a nice pet, which turned into a belly rub.
My eye drops are helping already. My eyes still hurt enough that I want to use the drops 4 or 5 times a day instead of the 3 times I’m supposed to use them, but I won’t do that. I am staying home from work today. Anyone who saw how I looked yesterday would expect me to be there today. I look better today though. My eyes aren’t quite as red (more pink now) and they aren’t watering as much. But it is SO HARD trying to stop myself from rubbing or scratching at my eyes because they are still sore and very itchy. Thanks everyone for your well wishes. I think I should be okay to go to work tomorrow.
Like that ever works. She’d have much better luck if she opened a can of cat food or jiggled a bag of kitty treats. That always works. On another note, saw seven juncos and a spotted towhee while out walking today.
Marie Killilea wrote a book about her daughter and they lived on the Long Island Sound. She wrote that once when a hurricane was coming, she whistled for her cats with individual whistles for each one. The neighbor had a parrot that was copying her, and the poor kitties were running back and forth. Marie sent one of her children over to tell the owner that the parrot had better knock it off, or it would not live to see the dawn! Always got a kick out of that story.

Moose comes when I call him. Blackjack won’t. Sometimes I can break up spats just by calling Moose.

Darcy (brown-base kitty in my avatar) always came when called, AND she’d jump up onto my lap. Ahhhh, that’s life with a cat!
