Red’s surname is MacLean which suggests that he really is of Irish descent. His Irish ancestors may have settled in the Scottish Highlands before they came to America but he is still of Irish descent.
I’ve just checked Red’s family name on Wikipedia. I see that Rover is stated there as being mostly lab but has claimed to be part “Portugese Water Spaniel”. Therefore Rover’s heritage is part Portugese.
I always hated it when, in school on St. Patrick’s Day, teachers would add O’ to the beginning of our last names. My last name was long enough without the added syllable, and I’m NOT Irish…not even a little.
I am almost all Irish, red hair and all, including a problem with anesthetics not working very well on me. By default, so is my beagle, but she doesn’t know that she is adopted.

I am Irish but take a low profile on St. Pats. I am too close to the ethic stereotypes. But, let folks enjoy the day as they choose.

I may have had a distant relative that was in jail with O’Henry. His name was As Jennings. He is mentioned in book called “Bloodletters and Badmen”
