We used to have three zones at my parent’s church: Crawlers, walkers and runners. (Above about 5th grade, you were invited to do something else). It worked pretty well because you didn’t keep what you found. There was a prize for most found, but the treats themselves were dumped out and shared equally.

As Frazz says, failure to correct that kind of behavior is infinite, and the new varieties are constantly appearing.

I went to an Easter egg hunt once in my home town when I was young. It’s not a really big town. But there were more kids there than I’d ever seen in my life.

Not just bigger kids, but parents knocking down other little kids.

I don’t remember ever participating in an Easter Egg hunt, or even seeing one in person. We used to have Tootsie Roll hunts in the spring, but they didn’t coincide with any holiday.

I just read that adults behaved so badly at an Ohio mall Easter egg hunt that there won’t be one there next year.

And then there’s the category where you get to use slingshots to take out the competition.

Growing up in a small southern town, I came to wonder why all the fundamentalist churches were so keen on appropriating a pagan spring fertility custom. I concluded that if they were so willing to accept the reality of heaven and hell, what’s a rodent-delivered basket of multicolored chicken eggs?

Easy… the more conservative they (or their parents) are, the more willing they will be to hurt others to get what they want.

In Ohio, it was the adults who were pushing kids out of the way. Some of the eggs had coupons for more valuable prizes.

What’s really sad is when it’s the PARENTS doing that.

When I was little, we hunted for jelly beans hidden around the living area of our house.
