That can be taken a couple ways, and I’m not sure which or if there is a mystery fourth. I’d normally assume #1, but the “are you saying?” and “yup” create ambiguity.
“wanted Leo to be a baseball player.” = and worked with him until he’s great.
“wanted Leo to be a baseball player.” = but, sadly, the kid lacked the skills.
“wanted Leo to be a baseball player.” = but, sadly Leo is more interested in chasing squirrels.
P1 Emulating Gil and his coaching skill and style, Emmett reappears after a prolonged absence and states the obvious. That or Cami told him she was not late.
P2 Leo Atazhoon-heit channels his inner Charles “Chief” Bender.
P3 “Yep, his old man wanted him to be a Cleveland Indian. That horse has left the barn.”
In all reality , I know someone who’s parents wanted him to be an award-winning writer but he chose to write a comic strip and comic books. This broke his parents hearts !
Henry definitely has a thing for Cardi B. and Megan Thee Stallion. That’s the second or third WAP drop in less than a year. Hey Mopman, “Now get a bucket and a mop, that’s some WAP.”
Now they have to find Leo a pair of spikes?? Or is the whole team going to get a new pair. Maybe a Go Fund Me page to get Leo a new glove so he doesn’t have to use his great grandfather’s.
In All Reality (sorry Mr. Reality) aren’t these kids on the coach’s radar as they come up through JV? If he throws that hard his first year on Varsity (I am assuming he is a soph/junior) why didn’t he play as a freshman? Unless these kids transferred (highly possible in Gil Thorp land as the kid is suddenly a stud player) wouldn’t the coaches already know these kid’s stories? Maybe I am thinking about this a little too hard since this is only a comic strip?
Dang, what happened to Gil? He lost weight again. With those arms he would break them if they tried the Liftathon today. And speaking of today, you should be reading Mopped Up Thorp today.

Wanted. Dead or alive. Time for Derek “Slim” Chance to visit and offer young Leo pitching and guitar picking tips.

P-1: We can tell Leo is a great pitcher because someone is fielding a ground ball.
P-2: The coaches discuss the ambiguity of the English language, sort of like Gil’s kids sexes.
P-3: Leo’s best pitch: The “Italian Knuckle” Ball.
