When I turned 21 (way back when) the first bottle of liquor I bought was mead. I had come across a book on mead and it had lots of stories. Many relating to mead hangovers, which apparently can be quite severe. But the panel with Thor reminded me of the story of the guy who drank so much that he fell into a vat of mead and umm… was spirited away … permanently.
Pogo is a rare thing to discover in these days. After Walt Kelly died in the early 70’s his wife and others tried to continue the strip, but they couldn’t quite maintain the unique essence of Pogo, though. Without constant exposure these past fifty years many young folks are not aware of him. I fell in love with Pogo whilst reading the editorial page comics (in Detroit the paper deemed it to controversial in the early 60’s to be read by young folks). A rare blend of characters you simply couldn’t help but fall in love with – Albert, Churchy, Howland, Porky, Beauregard, Mademoiselle Hezbah and others (especially that crotchety old lady who smoked a pipe and the ever aspiring frog). And of course, the political characters who were so thinly disguised.
For Thor, a giant vat of ale. For Venus, a starring rôle in a Botticelli tableau. For Karma, nirvana. For Boody, dating a biker-chick dragonette. For El Jefe, receiving a Reuben Award.

I love how the enlightened Karma has a clear, still mind, the goal of all meditation.

Ah, Pogo. Without him I wouldn’t realize that this month, Friday the 13th falls on a Saturday.

I imagine someone asking, “Aw man, why’d she have to wear clothes in this version?”
And I’m not talking about the female dragon.
