If it’s in reply to a request from “the bank”, close the chat or email, and using a different device go the bank’s website and change your pw there, or call the number on your ATM card, just to be on the safe side.

Used debit card at the issuer’s machine. Within 8 hours, ‘test’ charges of about $5 each hit simultaneously in New York and Florida. Issuer said ‘we don’t know how that happened.’ ‘Easy,’ says I. ‘Just check the slot on the machine for a ’reader. Then check your software protocols.’ Naturally we tanked that card and set a very low limit on the amount that could be withdrawn without approval with the new number.

Years earlier, I dropped my card and within a couple of hours someone had charged over $700 for lawn care equipment at a big box retailer 12 miles away. When I called the credit service about the card, I suggested to them that the retailer had slipped up because the card included my photo and that it would show I was neither female nor non-American. The voice said, ‘H-m-m-m-m, Interesting.’ Always wondered how that situation was resolved.

The password “incorrect” is quite useful. That way if you forget it and put in the wrong one, the computer will help you and tell you that “Password is incorrect”.

Lately scammers use text messages by sending you a link claiming unclaimed packages for example…When in doubt, call the bank or whatever institution directly and remember that scammers target everything that you have that can be accessed on the internet.

My bank alerts me that I need to change password when I sign in. Also, I use an offline password generator usually set for 20 character passwords. And I check charges at least weekly.

Banks do not allow the re-use of passwords, even if just a portion of it. At least my bank does that.
