I can see where a lot of today’s kids would have no idea what a drive-in theater is.

Do they still do backseat DVD players?

Drive-ins can generate memorable experiences and I’m not talking about movies!

Many eons ago when I was a tot, we would pile into the station wagon dressed in our pajamas. Mom would have popped a giant batch of popcorn and Dad put an air mattress in the rear section. Off we would go to the drive-in. We kids would play on the playground until dark, watch the cartoons and the kid’s feature from the car and then zonk out on the air mattress. Mom and Dad would watch the adult feature and then drive us all home and carry the kids to bed. The sound was provided by a metal speaker that attached to the driver side window and was then adjusted by Dad. It usually sounded like a radio with an intermittent static problem. Since we had no experience of the kind of screens and sound systems of today’s movie theatres or even today’s home setups, we were perfectly satisfied with the fun of an evening at the drive-in. Families would arrive early to get a good spot in the rows close to the screen while the teenagers jostled for space in the back ones. The older kids and adults would pass back and forth to and from the concession stand and bathrooms. The sounds of car doors slamming and the occasional errant horn boop would add an extra layer of ambiance. It really was a magical evening for kids….ahhhh, nostalgia!

Kids today are more used to log-in theater than drive-in.

Fun Fact: By 2020, there were only a few drive-in theaters and they suddenly became popular since it was a safe way to get out to the movies. One theater owner said he had adults thank him with tears in their eyes and tell him they drove 100 miles just to take their children out.

Hammie, you will love it. It will be dark, you get to wear your PJ’s to the movie, eat lots of snacks cheap, just bring them in the trunk of your car, and If you have to pee, you can just pee out of the window and no one will see or care.

If you are lucky, you might get to sit on the top of the van to see the movies!!!

Hammie figured out the basics. That’s What mattered. And it’s also not that different from playing your DVD in the car.

Our junior and senior years in high school, we would take a friend’s dad’s pickup, back into the space, and sit in the back. Ah, the 60s!

Ah, drive-ins are a dying breed. I went to plenty of drive-ins, but can’t tell you a thing about what movies I saw or the plot…
