This prompted a random recollection of useless trivia. The origin of the term “shave tail” referred to a mule only recently broken to harness. The mule’s tail was shaved so the mule skinners would know the animal was unpredictable. Later, it was applied to a newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Army, the term spread from there.
