Donald Trump’s attorneys are now asking the judge to put his trial off until after the election to avoid election interference.
Donald Trump is a private citizen.
He is not the nominee of any political party.
He does not hold any public office.
Election for the office he now seeks is more than a year and three months away. Inauguration for the next presidential term is more than a year and a half away.
Trump is a guy who heard that prosecutors in New York, Georgia, Washington DC and likely additional venues, intended to bring criminal charges and is trying to use the excuse of being a candidate to avoid trial.
There is nothing in the Constitution or any statute that would prevent a criminal trial even for someone who is actually a sitting president, much less a guy who is not the president and has not even received an official nomination from a party.
Sports stars heading into world championships can’t claim that a potential criminal trial would interfere in their chances at a title, and guys positioning themselves to run for a future public office can’t claim that the “inconvenience” they caused by their crimes is sufficient reason to delay accountability they brought upon themselves.
As Luckovich’s excellent cartoon illustrates, using Trump’s absurd “logic,” anyone planning to commit a crime should just file papers to run for president right before they commit their crime.
Trump’s life of crime is about to catch up with him.
Even though I think Trump is probably more besieged than he should be compared to Biden and Hillary ( none of whom I think should ever run again), the logical action would be to put off his presidential run until 2028 untill all the legal issues are cleared up. If he win in 2024, he could try to pardon himself. A pardon could even be in Hunter’s future if Biden loses. I will never vote forTrump again. A l.ibertarian protest vote is almost certainly going to be my 2024 choice.
The last thing a mob boss wants is the right to a speedy trial, especially when their are so many perks while being out on bail. The ubiquitous delay tactics commonly sought & granted in trials for white-collar crime in the US are maddening. When the judiciary can also be politically influenced, you have the perfect “get out of jail free” scenario.
According to the ‘Son of Sam’ statutes a criminal cannot profit from their crime. Since the Trump campaign raises significantly more funds when he is indicted the government should put a freeze on the funds, at least until he is an official candidate, not just running.
Why is it that trump thinks he should be immune from prosecution for things he, himself, has done because he’s running for president, but Biden should be prosecuted WHILE president for something he had nothing to do with? OK, I get why trump would spout that nonsense, but why are so many people willing to happily go along with the double standard?
Interesting philosophical question I can’t answer: how will right prevail if its defenders play by the rules against those who have no rules (I keep defaulting to ‘bust a metal chair over their heads’)

I assure you that the bag contains only campaign funds donated by the faithful. It’s Hilary’s fault.

Rump wants all his trials delayed until after he stops running for president. That will occur after he’s dead, maybe.

That’s Trump, in microcosm.
And BTW, what do you think would happen to anyone else who put Barack Obama’s address on social media, so would-be terrorists could find him?

To clarify: e.g. when the 1st Amendment is used in service of ignorance and superstition, to reduce the freedoms of those with other beliefs
