That’s a scam. A “friend” tried to sell me one of those.

And owning real estate with a strata fee attached has got to be really stupid- effectively a mortgage payment for life, with no protection against increases.

And then spending two years trying to get them to cancel your contract.

TIMESHARE: Something some couples have a hard time finding when they work different shifts.

Do you have the time and self-assurance to get your fair share of the time out of a timeshare?

A pipe that only drains one’s bank accounts while returning little joy.

I thought those things had died years ago, but evidently many who signed up decades ago are still paying and angry about it. On the other hand, during the 80’s and 90’s, a colleague bought into one. Her family traded it for different condo/vacation spots all over the world. They did that every year for most of 2 decades in the late 1900’s and really enjoyed the time. They sold it to someone else who did the same.

Evidently the buyers who plan the buy and follow a similar pattern get a good return. Obviously not the case for most.

With the added bonus of maintenance fees.

Little-known fact: in prehistoric times there was a thriving market in caves, grottoes and even climbable trees.

Cavepersons had to pay extra clams for dinosaur-proof caves, or ones with streams that trickled through the roof, allowing for the installation of showers and bathtubs.

Paleontologists know this because they’ve found cave paintings of real estate agents knocking on cave doors. However there’s still debate about when time-shares were first invented.

Everyone I know of who has bought into a timeshare could not wait to sell their portion and get out of it. The maintenance hassles, fees, damage, etc were bad, but scheduling their 2 or 3 weeks in the timeshare was a huge issue, especially around any of the holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Sometimes I like to take Wiley’s Dictionary and think of my own descriptions.

Timeshare – what a time traveler experiences.

A hidden or unsuspected danger or difficulty.

What that really means is, you will pay all the taxes on the real estate.

Timeshares were the biggest scams, where you can sell property 50 times over.

Timeshare – The investment in a vacation location that costs so much that you can’t afford to take vacations anymore. Go ahead, try to get out from under it.

And never being able to use it when you want to.

P.T. Barnum famously quipped that there is a sucker born every minute. The huge number of time share owners are living proof of that assertion.

John Oliver did a segment on timeshares. From what I recall, he wasn’t a fan.

After 20 years in Cancun, we sold ours. We started when some things cost a million pesos, or one dollar.
