I knew I wasn’t going to make it as a chess player when as an adult playing in a tournament, I got crushed by a nationally rated expert. This NRE was ten years old!
I had a fancy Onyx chess set that was right there where everyone could see it and challenge me to a game. It was the typical social-obligation gift from who-knows. I found the perfect solution. I sold it and bought a game console :D I know one day someone is going to come and ask “Remember that chess set I gave you, I’d like to play a game with you.”
In 10th grade (1966), I played chess with the smartest kid in physics class everyday during lunch. It was several months before I could delay defeat and several more before I came close to winning. I actually one a game after six months. I kept learning and improving with every game. The main thing I learned was perseverance.
Bub should try speed chess — set a total playing time/player of (say) five to ten minutes/game. Bub wouldn’t be agonizing over the best move if he hadn’t had time to agonize over it. Speed chess also helps you to see the dynamics of the “combat.”

A couple decades back I had GF who like to play chess. I don’t and never got very good at it, but she would accuse me of letting her win.

My best friend, (RIP) taught me how to play chess years ago. I won and she never played against me again.
