It was funny at first, but now little Maddy felt it was a true medical condition. Every visit with grandpa began and ended with “Pull my finger.”

(When I was about four years old, my father introduced me to my great-uncle, Walter. He had a large, mottled red nose due to what I now assume was a bad case of rosacea. Thinking to be clever I said, “You mean I have an uncle who looks like Jimmy Durante?” My uncle was livid, and my father was very angry at me. I still choke on the memory.) (But I really LIKED Jimmy Durante.)

The Norwegian version of the crazy cat lady: The crazy poultry guy.

“Of course I keep my chickens in the house! Doesn’t everybody? They add to that ‘down home’ aroma.”

“Ah, the new chimney sweep. She’ll do just fine.”

She just never experienced that old guy smell before.
