This was an opportunity for Hans to be the “cool grandfather” by showing off his tap dancing skills with his wooden shoes.

/// Little Dagmar looked up at him, wary

to go into Grandfather’s house, where he

    invites chickens inside

    just before they get fried.

He looks hungry, and she finds that scary.

This is your uncle Fred. All you have to do is walk all around the house, be sure to get into the corners, His Roomba is broken. We’ll wash you up at home.

It was funny at first, but now little Maddy felt it was a true medical condition. Every visit with grandpa began and ended with “Pull my finger.”

    The tiny grandchild was astonished

And said something her mom admonished:

When first meeting old Grandpa Boze

She took one look at his nose

And said, “It’s so big and it glows. Is it polished?

    .

    The grandfather wasn’t perturbed,

Although her mother was very disturbed.

But the young child was but girlish

Did not mean to be churlish

Knowing not what bad thing she had occurred.

    .

But Grandpa hugged her for her blurted truth,

Thinking back to his own youth

And said, “You’re right, and feel no shame —

I told my grandpa just the same.

Heaven nose it runs in our family, forsooth!

    .

(When I was about four years old, my father introduced me to my great-uncle, Walter. He had a large, mottled red nose due to what I now assume was a bad case of rosacea. Thinking to be clever I said, “You mean I have an uncle who looks like Jimmy Durante?” My uncle was livid, and my father was very angry at me. I still choke on the memory.) (But I really LIKED Jimmy Durante.)

    Visiting Grandfather

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Chickens in art" Wikimedia

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Yandex search engines) in the browser address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and choose the first Category: found and once there find the text string bedstefader, and click its link for info and links that point to more info (perhaps best viewed using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, which can automatically translate most webpages if necessary) about this roughly jumbo envelope size painting (the Grandpa one before it has a clearer image of a close-to-identical scene painted by the artist in 1895).

Again, a larger strip image is shown by (Ctrl- or right-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #3203 (October 12, 2023) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu (even larger, if you trim what’s after .png from the URL). I have added a comment there pointing to the blog entry with my comment and reply pointing to info about this artist I used to point to here. So far, 3 works by him have been used here, the March 4, 2022, strip being the prior.

Wooden shoes are hard to draw in perspective. (I always hammer mine flat before trying to draw them.)
