I think Rose would be justified in correcting Spud’s use of a nonexistent word. He wants to be the second-smarterest, what’s wrong with helping him out?
Nice of Rose to keep it to herself. I, on the other hand, found myself getting beat up a lot in school, which just goes to prove that Rose is more smarterer than I was.
My favorite radio station here claims to play the most music, with less commercials. Every time the DJ says that, my brain pretty much is like Rose’s in the last panel, screaming “FEWER!!”
Excellent restraint, Rose. I know it’s tempting to point things out like that, but from experience we learn it’s best to let people discover some things on their own.
All joking aside. Rose is smart because her parents have her participate in things that interest and challenge her and they work hard to keep her on track and develop her intellect. Wallace is also smart, not because his academic prowess, but because of his inquisitive nature and ability to think outside the box and see things a different way. Rose would be lost outside her paradigm. Wallace doesn’t even recognize a paradigm. As an adult Rose will advance knowledge, but Wallace will discover things never imagined.
Cut Spud some slack. There’s a bank that is named “Truist”. If adults can name a financial institution “Truist”, the Spud should be allowed "smarterest’.

Isn’t it? Is that not how words are formed? Someone comes up with an idea for a word and other people start using it

I had to read this three times before my brain would allow me to parse smarterest instead of smartest. My brain often confuses me this way.

In Ephesians 3:8, Paul makes up a word that is the Greek equivalent of “leaster.” Some translations render it as “less than the least.”

It’s a good thing Rose can suppress that scream. Very good for her indeed.

Rose is a true friend that is not putting Wallace down in front of others. Not that I think Wallace would take it badly.

This whole exchange sounds like a scene from the movie Dumb and Dumberer … due to the word choice, at least. Fun.
