My wife and I used to take the kids to NYC from Philly on NJ Transit every so often. Go up, spend the day seeing the sights, finding a new deli to try and riding the subway if the next destination was too far to walk.

My folks always drive to visit our relatives in Brooklyn. It saves a lot of money and only a couple or so hours away from home.

The answer to “why fly there” might be: Because you can take a plane to LaGuardia. That’s in Queens. Everything in the world is to be found in Queens! — from sauerkraut to string hoppers. (Well, OK, very few deserts and mountains, though).

No AMTRAK trains from Albany to NYC for several days due to a problem garage building over the tracks. The news about safety on the subway in NYC is not much better.
